Where I Like to Write

Lately, I’ve really been enjoying going to the library to write (it helps going with a friend!). It’s quiet, I can put on instrumental fantasy music if I need to (with headphones, of course), and my laptop screen isn’t so large that I can have a lot of things open at once (unlike my desktop computer which is a behemoth made for cross-referencing and editing).

At least once a month, I also meet with my critique partner at a coffee shop. It’s a fun way to try new places and work with a friend. I do find I get a little distracted by all the great people (and listening), so at coffee shops, I tend to do more outlining, revising, and editing, than content creation.

And of course, I write at home. My sweet spouse got me a lap desk for Valentines’s Day. I’d been telling him I’d like one for my birthday, but he surprised me. It’s been so helpful! I get to sit in our little library and write away comfortably.

My plan for March through May is to get the first draft of my next book done. These three places will be instrumental for making that happen. I’m taking the Stephen King approach and am writing first thing in the morning. Other than breakfast and a dog walk, nothing else gets done until my writing gets done. I used to be a nighttime writer, but I’m finding that doesn’t work as well for me in this season of life. And that’s okay.
